In-Character Information
Name: Navarre
Game/Series: Fire Emblem 1
Teacher/Student/Other: Teacher or Truancy Officer
Canon Point: end of the game
Age: 20s (exact age is not specified)
Grade Level/Class Taught/Job: I was thinking one of two jobs. 1. truancy officer. He'd kill/maim/beat up anyone who was truant. there'd probably be a lot less truancy around. or 2. sword/blade arts teacher. He'd be such a terrible teacher, beating up idiots and assigning weird and meaningless homework.
Dorm or Living Arrangement: He wants to room by himself, though giving him a roommate would be absolutely hilarious.
Personality:
Okay, so since Navarre has like 2 lines in the game, I'm basing his personality off Maki Hakoda's manga (which follows the game anyway) and a lot of head canon.
Easiest way to describe Navarre is an antisocial ass. He says what's on his mind and is rather direct about it. When he first meets Marth, he calls the prince soft because he wouldn't kill his enemies. His wit is rather quick and he has no hesitation being a douchebag to someone (with few exceptions). He does not like when people try get the better of him, and will punch people in the face when they tick him off. Or slash them. Both work.
Speaking of killing enemies, Navarre is a mercenary. He has no hesitation in slaying someone and seems to live for fighting. Oguma calls Navarre a "God of Death with long hair and a red sword" (note the mention of his fabulous hair). He is considered nearly unbeatable, according to Oguma again, and this gives him a bit of a big head. He does like to think he's the best swordsman there is. He does have the skill to back up that claim too and probably would pick fights out of boredom. Navarre has no hesitation in killing or injuring someone. Being raised by mercenaries, he learned to kill at a young age. He's become numb to death and blood and is not bothered by it one bit.
Navarre tends to be a rather antisocial. He leans against walls and just stares at people, crossing his arms, watching them. Why? Boredom. Intimidation. He's tall and stares at people, smirking behind his hair. Creepy. When he does talk, he likes to egg people on and get the better of them. He likes to prove his superiority. He also likes to argue and make fun of people. If someone tried to defy the rules of the classroom, he would point them out and try to make them feel incredibly awkward or even inferior. And if they talked back, he'd have fun arguing with them or just punch them in the face. Depended on who it was.
He prefers not to make friends. For him, someone could be an ally one day and an enemy the next. It's part of the mercenary lifestyle. An ally is whoever's paying him. Then again, his respect for allies isn't all that high anyway. They tick him off and his short temper gets the better of him and he just punches or slashes them.
Exceptions. Right. So big badass mercenary has a weakness. Women. He refuses to fight them and will even go as far as to protect them. He protects Sheeda and seems rather fond of her. For him, women and children shouldn't be on the battlefield. This doesn't mean he thinks they're weak. Instead he doesn't want to see them dead. It is probably his one and only redeeming quality.
There is another exception. While Navarre likes to feel superior (which he's really strong and probably mostly superior anyway), he likes a challenging fight. His rivalry with Oguma is a good indicator of this. Oguma matches his speed and skill, though the two are rather opposite in personality. Without some sort of rival or someone to argue with, Navarre gets bored. He needs that challenge to feel alive and entertain him.
Short temper. So here's what ticks off Navarre the most.
- First and foremost, Navarre doesn't like idiots. They're annoying and think they're better than everyone else, when they're truly not. (Then again, Navarre thinks so highly of himself, most people are idiots to think they can beat him). The exception seems to be rivalries, where the idiot graduates to rival status by proving his worth. (sorry, no her. He won't fight women)
- Second would be harming women and children. The big bad Navarre has such a soft-spot for them. He doesn't want to see them harmed or bad come to them.
- Third. Touching. Don't touch Navarre. He hates it.
- Forth would be technology. Akaneia is a Medieval-like world. There isn't any of this computer or cellphone crap. Trying to post on the network would be rather difficult at first and Navarre would probably slash several computers, especially if they ticked him off or didn't do what he told them to do.
Backstory:
Good links are so hard to find. So here's the dialog from the game. Navarre appears in chapter 3. Here's the summary from the remake. Essentially the same idea. Navarre is an optional recruit and really has no impact on the storyline whatsoever. He's there to hack and slash at things and call Marth a pussy for not wanting to kill everything in his path.
The manga gives him some backstory. Navarre was raised by band of mercenaries after they found him abandoned in the forest. So they trained him with all their techniques. One night, during an ambush, Navarre encounters Oguma, and they tangle in a fight. They find themselves matched in skill and speed and end up breaking in a draw. And so they become rivals, vowing to defeat one another.
Navarre runs into Oguma again when he crosses paths with the Altean Army. He's surprised to see Oguma with Marth (that damn pansy) and calls Oguma a pussy too. Well until they fight and Navarre's glad to see Oguma hadn't gone soft and still had some skill. At the time, the Samsian Pirates had hired Navarre, but Marth wanted Navarre's strength in the fight to liberate the continent. Navarre didn't particularly care about liberating the continent or any of that stuff. The number of wars going on gave him a lot of jobs. That meant more money, better weaponry, and stuff to senselessly kill. Fun times.
But Navarre does join Marth and his army, partly out of boredom and partly because of Sheeda. She speaks passionately about wanting to protect the continent and restore the peace. While Navarre doesn't much care for the peace either, he finds Sheeda's passion moving and joins the party.
Anything Else?: Navarre is arriving here out of boredom. There's no more war in Akaneia, so he's gotta find something to do. He's bored without being able to beat the senses out of idiots that stand in his way. So he came to a school where fighting was normal to beat the sense out of idiots and probably get stuck with some lame-ass job he doesn't care about, but will do anyway out of boredom, especially if they pay him. He does like money. It's good for buying new swords or getting the old blood rune sword sharpened and repaired. He does like that sword. It's red. Like blood.
In-Character 1st person sample:
[ Navarre's been here awhile so he's finally figured out the best way to post on this confusing network: web cam. It's the answer to everything and he doesn't have to hold the damn thing. None of that cellphone crap, whatever a cellphone was anyway. He didn't have any need for that.
Not to mention this is Navarre's second computer. The first one got slashed and destroyed when it kept asking him "Cancel or Allow?".
But that's not why he's here. He's here to be an ass on the network, as usual. It kept him occupied and entertained. Perhaps he'd find someone to keep his rather fleeting attention. Oh a rival would be nice, but he'd have to find someone who wasn't an idiot that would keep him entertained. That was not easy to do. ]
This place was supposed to be a school of fighters, but somehow I still find myself bored. Is no one actually strong in this place? Can no one match my skill? A pity, really. I did have high hopes for this place, but it seems I'm still disappointed.

And for shits & giggles, here're journal entries from an AU version where Navarre was in a boy band in the 90s with Shinon and a few others. He enjoyed ragging on Shinon on a fairly regular basis.

In-Character 3rd person sample:
Well this was an interesting place, the mercenary reasoned. He'd received word that there was a school where fighters gathered. The peace now established in Akaneia just wasn't Navarre's thing. He'd grown bored of the lack of jobs and the lack of fighting and blood and killing.
He leaned against the wall of the school, watching people pass by. He folded his arms, staring at people from beneath his long locks of hair. Navarre wanted to judge the quality of the people here before he decided to stay. He never really stayed in one place for long, yet this place had the potential to keep his attention. He wasn't the student type and didn't particularly care to teach anyone. He'd probably end up with idiots in his classes (and idiots would die quickly in a very bloody death).
A few women passed by. No, they wouldn't do. He couldn't fight them. He had a policy not to fight women or children.
Then some rather odd people passed. No weapons. They wouldn't do either. Navarre sighed. So far, this place didn't seem promising.
And then some with swords passed. That was more like it. Yes, these two could prove for some entertainment.
